The weather remains hot, so let's keep to the sensible options. We will get the bus to Pak Kung Au and walk on the Tei Tong Tsai Country trail heading towards the concrete path that will take us up past Fa Hong Monastery towards the Wisdom Path. This is a gradual ascent on an easy trail that offers shade on a hot day. Once we hit the Wisdom Path will take the Shek Pik Country Trail down towards Shek Pik Reservoir. The Shek Pik Country Trail is mainly flat and also offers us some shade. Once we hit the reservoir we will grab a bus back to either Tung Chung or Mui Wo. An alternative option if the weather is still very hot is to take the bus back at Ngong Ping Village. We can decide on the day.

Meeting Point: 9:30am @ Tung Chung MTR, Exit A

We`ll walk from Kennedy Town up to the Pok Fu Lam Rd to find a walking trail that eventually joins the Hong Kong Trail. Most of these trails are in the shade. If the weather isn`t too hot or wet we`ll divert over High West (494m) to Victoria Peak. Note the trail up to High West is slightly brushy, but is short and nothing too bad. High West offers panoramic views over the western and southern sides of the island. We`ll explore the gardens around the peak and, if the weather it still hot, enjoy an ice cream. On a clear day The Peak offers spectacular views of Hong Kong.

Once we are done with The Peak we`ll come back down a different trail back to Kennedy Town and visit Lo Pan Temple. Lo Pan is the patron saint of Chinese builders and contractors and this is the only temple in Hong Kong dedicated to him. Because of this it has many unique features and is home to the Lo Pan festival, which takes place on 13th day of the sixth month of every Lunar Calendar.

This is stages 3 & 4 of the Hong Kong Trail. We'll start walking from the station and find our way up, past the Aberdeen Chinese Cemetery to the start of stage 3. This section has 490 meters of elevation gain. Stage 3 is fairly short as it winds it's way towards Aberdeen Country Park and onto Wan Chai Gap. From there we will continue onto stage 4. Part of this stage overlaps with the Wong Nai Chung Gap Trail, which is infamous for being a significant site during World War II. We will finish at Wong Nai Chung Gap Road and get buses back home. We may stop somewhere for a bite to eat and refreshments on the way back which is optional.

Meeting Point: 9:30am @ Wong Chuk Hang MTR, Exit B

You'll meet your hike leader in Discovery Bay at the ferry pier. We'll follow the coastal path past Costa Court, then crossing the road to continue along the coastline on increasingly rougher trails. If the weather is good and the hikers are keen, we'll see if we can find the back trail that starts at the bottom of the road leading to the Trappist Monastery. Ideally we will find the ridgetop trails that take us around to Man Kok beach. It that doesn't work, we'll take the usual proper trail and turn left on the lower level loop trail to visit Man Kok and a few other beaches along the way.

Bring a pack lunch so that your mouth isn't watering as we view the restaurants of Mui Wo from afar.

Merry Christmas from Roz Hiking.

Our annual Christmas hike to our favourite picnic rock on the Chi Ma Wan Peninsula. The trail is a fairly easy trail with a couple of minor gradients. Feel free to bring along anyone who wants to join in the festive cheer and please bring at least 1 food/drink item to share. After the picnic we will continue around the lower trail back to Pui-O and then jump on a bus back to Mui Wo for a final Christmas drink and delicious soup at China Bear before heading home. If the weather is nice we will walk all the way to Mui Wo instead.

Meeting Point: 9.30am @ Central Ferry Pier No.6 to catch the 9.40am ferry to Mui Wo. You may also catch the bus from Tung Chung and meet us in Pui-O. If you take the bus aim to get to Pui-O for 10:30am and wait opposite the Bella Ciao Restaurant (Lo Wai Tsuen stop).

We will take minibus 82 to Pineapple Dam and follow the Shing Mun Reservoir until we hit the start of the Mac 7 and start our ascent towards Needle Hill at an elevation of 532m. This is a main trail, but is a little steep in places, especially the final ascent to the summit. It is considered one of the more difficult sections of the Mac. Once we are done we'll head down from the summit towards the service road and eventually take the turn off for Sha Tin MTR. We will get a bite to eat somewhere before we head home.

Bring plenty of water and hiking sticks/poles if you need them.

If you have no plans on Christmas Day, you may want to join us for a short stroll on Lamma Island. After the walk we will head to Christine's for a festive drink before either ordering a takeaway or going to one of the fabulous restaurants on Lamma for a Christmas Day bite. Bring your party hats and enjoy the day! Afterwards we will head back home on the public ferry.

If you don't want to do the hike, you can head to Lamma and come straight to Christine's. Please contact us if you would like to know Christine's address. Aim to get there around 3pm.

We'll take a minibus to Fung Yuen and make our way through the Fung Yuen Nature and Culture Centre, following a trail steadily up through the Fung Yuen Valley. When we reach the trail that climbs Cloudy Hill, we'll go down and follow different trails going easterly. This area and the adjacent Sha Lo Tung Valley both have SSSIs which are Sites of Special Scientific Interest. We'll avoid the road as much as possible, and follow the trails through meadows and woods trying to find the Sha Lo Tung SSSI, enjoying all the plants and animals we can spot. If the trails are decent, we'll continue on to Ma Tseuk Tong Shan and circle back around to Ping Shan Chai. There are too many possibilities to decide where we will end --maybe back at Fung Yuen or possibly Hok Tao Reservoir.
