PAST WALKS - SPRING
Listed below are past walks we`ve done through various years in Mar, Apr & May.
See something you would like to do? Please let us know.
2 MARCH 2003: SHARP PEAK (DETOUR FROM MACLEHOSE STAGE 2)
We plan to walk from Pak Tam Au (end of MacLehose Stage 2) to Tai Long Au then turn left for Nam She Au, Sharp Peak, then Mai Fan Teng, down to the beach at Tung Wan, over to Tai Wan and then back to Tai Long Au to go out the same way we came in. Sturdy shoes with good tread are a must for this hike as there is lots of loose ground.
Meeting Point: 9.00am Diamond Hill MTR Exit C (to take the bus # 96R directly to Pak Tam Au)
9 MARCH 2003: LIN FA SHAN (NEAR LANTAU STAGE 2)
From Tung Chung we'll follow little-known narrow trail climbing easterly and steeply up to Pok To Yan. We'll follow the dramatic ridgetops over to Lin Fa Shan, one of the highest peaks in Hong Kong. Then we'll descend the many steps (easier than gravel) of the Lantau Trail and take the back route through the woods all the way to Mui Wo. This is one of my favorite hikes.
Meeting Point: 9:30am Exit A of the Tung Chung MTR station (30 mins from Central and trains run only every 10 mins)
16 MARCH 2003: RAZOR BACK OR TAI TO YAN
We take the bus 64K which takes us to Kadoorie Farm. The trail starts opposite. The first 30 minutes is hard going (more than a few huffs and puffs), as we climb up the path to the ridge (566m), but it is worth the effort. The walk along the ridge offers magnificent views. The hike finishes off at Fanling MTR station.
Meeting Point: 10.00 Tai Po Market (1 hour from Central!)
23 MARCH 2003: SHAM CHUNG TO HOI HA
So yes, this is an afternoon walk. The ferry takes us to the isolated Sham Chung Pier ($20) where we walk through some remote, but surprisingly well maintained village. The trail climbs up through stands of bamboo and trees to Nam Shan Tung and Pak Sha O before descending to Hoi Ha. There we can feed ourselves on traditional fare. Better if you can bring a torch as we will probably finish eating after sundown. Don't worry, we will be getting on a minibus to return. I need to know if you are coming as I need to book the restaurant and the minibus for good measure.
Meeting Point: University MTR 2:45 pm (Do not be late as we have to get to the Ma Lui Shui Ferry Pier for 3:15 ferry. (15 mins from the MTR).
30 MARCH 2003: KOW KING SHAN, (PEAK EAST OF TUEN MUN, OPPOSITE CASTLE PEAK)
About a 4 hour hike into unknown area, possibly rough in some sections. Fantastic views, weather permitting, over Tuen Mun, Gold Coast and Tai Lam Chung reservoir. We'll catch bus #960 to Tuen Mun and then taxi to the trailhead at Fu Tai Sheung Tsuen. The walk takes us alongside a narrow reservoir and then up up up to Kow King Shan. Rumours are that there are steps. We descend on the other side of the mountain finishing in So Kwun Wat. Second lunch will be at the Gold Coast.
Meeting Point: 9am outside Pacific Place, Admiralty at the east-bound bus stops.
6 APRIL 2003: LANTAU STAGES 5&6
Beautiful walk in the west of Lantau which starts looking over Shek Pik Reservoir and eventually descends down to finish in Tai O.
Meeting Point: 9.20am at Ferry Pier in Central to catch 9.30am ferry to Mui Wo.
13 APRIL 2003: LANTAU PEAK
Lots of steps up and down the second highest peak in Hong Kong but fantastic views over Shek Pik reservoir and the Big Buddha if the weather is good.
Meeting Point: 9.30am at Tung Chung MTR (1 hour from Central)
20 APRIL 2003: CLEARWATER BAY
We'll take a taxi from the MTR to Clearwater Bay road and from there walk over the hills above Clearwater bay on the left and Tseung Kwan O on the right finishing near Clearwater bay golf course for dinner in Po Toi O. This is a fairly easy afternoon hike.
Meeting Point: Tseung Kwan O MTR station 1.30pm
SUN 7 MAR 2004: KOW KING CHAN (PEAK EAST OF TUEN MUN, OPPOSITE CASTLE PEAK)
Fantastic views, weather permitting, over Tuen Mun, Gold Coast and Tai Lam Chung reservoir. We'll catch bus #960 to Tuen Mun and then taxi to the trailhead at Fu Tai Sheung Tsuen. The walk takes us alongside a narrow reservoir and then up up up to Kow King Shan. We descend on the other side of the mountain finishing in So Kwun Wat. Second lunch will be at the Gold Coast.
Meeting Point: 9am outside Pacific Place, Admiralty at the west-bound bus stops.
SUN 14 MAR 2004: CHI MA WAN (EAST HALF)
We'll catch a bus or taxi to Pui O to start the walk. We'll walk past the beach hopefully seeing some of Lantau's wild Buffalo on the way. We'll be following Lantau stage 12 until Shap Long Kau Tsuen where we'll continue following the road past the prison and around the coastline. We'll loop round the coast and return back over Old Man Mountain with its great 360 degree views.
Meeting Point: 9.20am at Mui Wo (Lantau) Ferry Pier in Central
SUN 21 MAR 2004: LENG PEI TSUEN TO NAM CHUNG (NORTH OF PAT SIN LENG)
After taking taxi or minibus to start of the walk, we will start off pretty gently (I think). We walk past the Chinese International Tea Club (I wonder if they let in rif-raff), and on to the Nam Chung Country Trail, which should lead us upwards and on towards the Pat Sing Ling Range, but nowhere near as strenuous (don't quote me!). Once we can reach a point called Ping Teng Au we start the downward run (did I say run, no not really!) (or if we are feeling energetic we can take a slight detour further up, many a choice). Then it's on down to Nam Chung/Luk Keng. We can eat there if we want, and then hop on a minibus back to Fanling MTR.
Meeting Point: 10.00am Fanling MTR
SUN 28 MAR 2004: FO TAN TO TAI PO KAU NATURE RESERVE
We'll walk up into Fo Tan from the station to find a good looking trail climbing out of the 'Cottage Area'. This is a beautiful valley that we've seen before from above. We're going to explore, so we might take a few wrong turns and have to back track. Hopefully we will find a way all the way up to Grassy Hill. If not, we will definitely connect with Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve where we will have time to take the long route to explore this scenic forest. We'll finish on Tai Po Road where buses take us back to town.
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Fo Tan MTR Station
SUN 4 APR 2004: KEUNG SHAN COUNTRY TRAIL, LANTAU (WEST OF SHEK PIK RESERVOIR) NOTE: CHING MING FESTIVAL
We'll catch a bus to Shek Pik and start walking at this reservoir following Lantau Trail stage 8 until meeting the start of the Keung Shan Country Trail. This is a fairly easy walk - with a lot of flat sections. We'll finish on Keung Shan road near the turn-off for the Buddha from where we can catch a bus to Mui Wo or Tung Chung
Meeting Point: 9.20am at Mui Wo (Lantau) Ferry Pier in Central
SUN 11 APR 2004: FO TAN TO TAI PO KAU NATURE RESERVE (NOTE: EASTER DAY)
We'll walk up into Fo Tan from the station to find a good looking trail climbing out of the 'Cottage Area'.
SUN 18 APR 2004: MT HALLOWS
So yes, this is an afternoon walk. The ferry takes us to the isolated Sham Chung Pier ($20) where we walk through some remote, but surprisingly well maintained villages. The trail climbs up through stands of bamboo and trees to Nam Shan Tung and Pak Sha O before descending to Hoi Ha.
Meeting Point: University MTR 2:30 pm (Do not be late as we have to get to the Ma Lui Shui Ferry Pier for 3:00 ferry which is 15 mins from the MTR).
SUN 25 APR 2004: WATERFALL HIKE AND KADOORIE FARM
We'll take bus 64K to Ng Tung Chai and start walking from there. We walk up shady stone steps past 4 beautiful waterfalls. Bring your swim gear as we'll probably stop for a dip if it is not too crowded. From there we will try to find the trail back down through Kadoorie farm where we can visit the animal section where they care for injured wild animals and the information area where you can learn about the work Kadoorie farm has done over the years developing new crop and animal varieties suitable for farming in Hong Kong's climate. (See http://www.kfbg.org.hk/ )
Meeting Point: 9.30am Tai Po Market MTR
SUN 9 MAY 2004: MACLEHOSE TRAIL STAGE 9 TO HO PUI RESERVOIR AND PAT HEUNG
We'll take a bus or taxi up Route Twisk to the start of the MacLehose Trail Stage 9. The trail is mostly shaded and gentle. We'll take a couple of short detours to bag the minor peaks in the area (for the record book) and then take a right turn on a Country Park Trail down to Ho Pui Reservoir. After the reservoir, there are several choices for routes through villages and fields back to the road. Overall this will be quite a relaxed hike.
Meeting Point: 9:30am, Tsuen Wan MTR Station Exit A
SUN 16 MAY 2004: SAI WAN BEACH (NR MACLEHOSE STAGE 2)
We'll taxi to the end of Sai Kung Sai Wan Road and then take an easy 45 minute walk to Sai Wan Beach. Once there we will swim (definitely bring a swim suit and towel). We may explore the pools on Kap Man Hang stream and maybe eat some noodles at the dai pai dong. Bring a snack in case the food isn't up to our standards.
Meeting Point: 9:30 Choi Hung MTR Station, Exit C
SUN 23 MAY 2004: SHUI LO CHO POOLS (LANTAU ISLAND)
We'll take the bus to the Kwun Yam temple on Tai O Road (past the turnoff for the Buddha), then walk past Ngau Kwo Tin and Lung Tsai Ng Yuen, turn right at Man Cheung Po to Shui Lo Cho. Need to leave the path at the bridge with the brown painted rails (see photos). After swimming in a choice of pools you finish along the waterfront back to Tai O. The hike is not too taxing but the descent by the waterfall is a steep scramble.
Meeting Point: 9:20 at the Central Ferry Piers for the 9:30 ferry to Mui Wo
SUN 30 MAY 2004: TAI PO KAU - RED/YELLOW TRAILS
This nature reserve is one of the few genuine areas of rainforest left in Hong Kong. It is very shaded and easy, so should be a good introduction to HK's flora and fauna.
Meeting Point: 9.30 a.m at Taipo MTR-We`ll get a taxi to the Reserve
SUN MAR 6, 2005: TSEUN WAN TO YUEN LONG ON THE YUEN LONG ANCIENT TRAIL
We will catch a bus (short distance) to the beginning of the trail. The beginning is up and away, but once we climb up the first steps and hill, it's not bad at all. Great views including Tsing Ma Bridge at the start. The walk involves a few twists and turns, and this is where my notes will be of use, or it may be an adventure. Parts I am sure you have done before. We end up in Yuen Long hopefully for at least a drink, and then a bus back home.
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Tsuen Wan MTR, exit which points to big buses (exit A)
SUN MAR 13, 2005: SAI KUNG WEST EXPLORATION
We explored some 'orange' trails in the area of Maclehose Stage 3. We got off the bus at Pak Tam Chung and took the nature trail from near the Visitor Centre. We turned left onto the trail leading to Ping Tun and then turned left again at a major junction. At the top of the hill we found a small trail veering left which took us to the top of Tai Tun for fantastic views over the whole park. As we didn't want to continue on this trail back toward Pak Tam Chung, we headed back down to the main trail and then took a right turn on an old trail to take us towards the valley bottom. We zigzagged through the viney woods for a while, following various indistinct trails until we emerged at a large private commercial garden (slipping easily under the barbed wire to get to the road). After a turn around the garden, we found the exit and discovered we were on the road near Ping Tun. We followed the quiet paved road around and up to Wong Ma Ying and then followed a well-established path, much of it of ancient origin down to Ngong Wo village where we saw a wild boar crossing the path in front of us.
Meeting Point: 9.30am Exit C1, Diamond Hill MTR
SUN MAR 20, 2005: RAZOR BACK OR TAI TO YAN
We take the bus 64K which takes us to Kadoorie Farm. The trail starts opposite. The first 30 minutes is hard going (more than a few huffs and puffs), as we climb up the path to the ridge (566m), but it is worth the effort. The walk along the ridge offers magnificent views. If the timing is right, we'll have a vegetarian lunch at the Fung Ying Seen Koon monastery right next to Fanling MTR station.
Meeting Point: 9:30 Tai Po Market MTR Station (1 hour from Central)
SUN APR 3, 2005: LEAD MINE PASS & SHING MUN RESERVOIR
The hike starts at the Tai Po Market MTR Station. It's a steep climb up Lead Mine Pass, but once we reach the top, the landscape is flat and the scenery beautiful. We'll walk along Shing Mun Reservoir and choose one of several options for going down the other side.
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Tai Po Market MTR Station
SUN APR 10, 2005: NORTHERN PLOVER COVE PARK
We'll taxi to the Wu Kau Tang Country Trail on Bride's Pool Road. After a nice climb to the ridge and a descent to the pass, we'll turn left on the trail to Lai Chi Wo, the old walled village. From Lai Chi Wo we'll take the northern route past So Lo Pun with a walk along the beach on Starlet Inlet to end at Luk Keng. This route will take us to a few out-of-the-way places with not too much difficulty.
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Tai Po MTR Station
SUN APR 17, 2005: SAI KUNG - N-S TRAVERSE
We'll take taxis towards Ping Tun at the top of the Tai Mong Tsai valley. From there the trail will take us north to Lui Ta Shek, on Maclehose 3 to Cheung Sheung, and then NE ending at Hoi Ha Road. Expect a nice scenic climb over Lui Ta Shek, then steady going all the way.
Meeting Point: 9.30am Exit C, Choi Hung MTR or 10:15am Sai Kung bus terminus (by pre-arrangement only)
SUN APR 24, 2005: TAI PO KAU - RED/YELLOW TRAILS
This nature reserve is one of the few genuine areas of rainforest left in Hong Kong. It is very shaded and easy, so should be a good introduction to HK's flora and fauna. I will try to get some handouts of the flora and fauna of the area so we can clued up on the creepy crawlies. Afterwards, we'll share lunch at nearby Little Egret Restaurant.
Meeting Point: 9.30 a.m at Tai Po MTR Station. We`ll get a taxi to the Reserve.
SUN MAY 1, 2005: SAI KUNG - PAK HANG VALLEY
We'll follow the Maclehose Trail from Pak Tam Au to Chek Kong and then find the path southwards following the Pak Hang valley. There are a couple of steep climbs but not hard for us. When we meet the Luk Wu Country trail we'll turn right and then make a left to climb Tai Cham Koi and then Tin Mei Shan. The trail down to Sai Kung Sai Wan Road may be a little brushy. Or, if the weather is hot, we'll take a detour to the Luk Wu pools instead. Bring your swimmers just in case.
Meeting Point: 9.30am Exit C1, Diamond Hill MTR
SUN MAY 8, 2005: THE FIVE GREAT POOLS OF THE NORTHEAST (PART 1)

FRI MAR 3, 2006: SHARP PEAK (DETOUR FROM MACLEHOSE STAGE 2)

Then we'll turn left to start on the rugged trail for Nam She Au, Sharp Peak, then Mai Fan Teng, down to the beach at Tung Wan, over to Tai Wan and then back to Tai Long Au to go out the same way we came in. Sturdy shoes with good tread are a must for this hike as there is lots of loose ground. Be prepared to spend some extra time enjoying the spectacular mountain views and beaches. Note: This is FRIDAY - special treat!
Meeting Point: 10.00am Sai Kung bus terminus
SUN MAR 5, 2006: MACLEHOSE 9 & 10
This is an easy, shaded, downhill and flat (good for meditative purposes). Lovely reservoir walk and we will picnic somewhere. There are other trails branching off that we may explore, but we'll see.
Meeting Point: 9.30am at Tsuen Wan MTR near Exit B, then taxi to Tsuen Kam Au.
SUN MAR 12, 2006: LANTAU CABLE CAR TRAIL
This is a brand new trail built to access the new cable car, so we haven't been there before. It promises to be steep and exposed with (hopefully) fantastic views. We'll start on the coastal path towards Tai O until we meet the new trail. From there it will be up, up, up following the pylons until we near the Big Buddha. For the way down, we'll follow go down through the woods around Shek Pik reservoir ending our walk on South Lantau near the dam.

From there we'll follow roads and trails around the wetlands between the Kam Tin River and the Shan Pui River. Since we haven't visited this area before there may be a few surprises. According to reports, we will be able to take a sampan across the Kam Tin River towards the end of the hike. Bring cameras, binoculars and nature books if you like and we'll take our time to explore the area.
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Yuen Long West Rail Station
SUN MAR 26, 2006: LING WUI SHAN & KEUNG SHAN, LANTAU
We'll take the bus from Mui Wo to Shek Pik Reservoir and start hiking from there. We'll climb Ling Wui Shan and Keung Shan and skirt the summit of Kwun Yam Shan, all on beautiful open trails. Meeting Point: 9.30am at the lobby for Hong Kong Parkview in Tai Tam Country Park
FRI APR 14, 2006 (GOOD FRIDAY): MACLEHOSE STAGE 2
We'll taxi around the High Island Reservoir to the end of the road, then follow the Maclehose trail past some of Hong Kong's most scenic beaches. There are plenty of hills and a possible restaurant stop if time permits. Be prepared for a long day. It's hard to keep a stiff pace when the beaches are so enticing.
Meeting Point: 10:00am at the taxi stand at Sai Kung bus terminus
SUN APR 16, 2006: HIGH ISLAND RESERVOIR TO SHA KIU FOR LUNCH (EASTER WEEKEND)
We'll start on the trail past the little village museum in Sai Kung Country Park and go all the way to the High Island dam. Turning right, we'll cross the dam on the road and then turn right again following the road downhill. Towards the bottom, there's a trail to the left which is clearly marked as closed ...yes, that's our trail. It's mostly flat following the headland past an abandoned village and arriving at a pretty bay with a restaurant at Sha Kiu. After lunch hikers can continue up the trail back to the reservoir road or hire the slow boat back to Sai Kung for easier digestion.
Meeting Point: 10am at the Sai Kung Bus Terminus near the toilets and the garden pool
SUN APR 23, 2006: TSING YI ISLAND CIRCUIT
From the MTR station we will walk to the bus stop and after a 10-minute bus ride (KMB no. 248M) we start walking briskly upwards at the northern entrance of the Tsing Yi nature trail. From the top of the main hill we will enjoy good views of the harbour and Lantau, Lamma and Hong Kong Island as well as the sprawling concrete jungle of Kowloon. Highest point is 334 metres. On the way down towards the new container terminal 9 we will observe the work in the container terminals. We can take refreshments at Maritime Square . The HK Trampers said that this "walk can be quite challenging" but didn't specify why (steps?) and they did it in May when it is reasonably hot. But apparently there are possible early exits, if you run out of steam or water.
Meeting Point: 9:30 Tsing Yi MTR Station
SUN MAY 7, 2006: PEAK TO WANCHAI GAP
This walk is Stages 1-3 of the 50-km Hong Kong Trail. It is a pleasant easy leafy walk with great views. Perfect for steamy days. We can walk up Aberdeen Reservoir Road and then catch a taxi or bus from near the Police Museum (which is free and worth a look) on Wanchai Gap. We can also alter this walk slightly if we feel like it.
Meeting Point: 9:30 Meet near Peak Lookout Restaurant
SUN MAY 14, 2006: DRAGON BALL POOL AND PAT SIN LENG NATURE TRAIL
From Tai Po Market MTR we'll bus to the start of the hike on Bride's Pool Road and enter the Wang Chung stream. We'll climb upstream via the Dragon Ball Pool and the many waterfalls and other pools along the way, to the Pat Sin Leng Nature Trail, and return to Bride's Pool Road. Bring your swimming gear ...don't be disappointed! Note: this hike involves some basic rock climbing which, although not technically difficult, is not without risk.
Meeting Point: 9:30 at Tai Po Market MTR Station
SUN MAY 21, 2006: KA LUNG POOL AND OLD DRAGON POOL
Due to rain, we actually walked the Wilson Trail Stage 10 instead followed by delicious Poon Choi lunch in Tai Mei Tuk. We'll take the minibus to Nam Chung, walk along Nam Chung Road to the Country Park Office, and then walk down the Ping-Ka stream to the Ka-Lung Pool. We will then retrace our steps and enter the Ping-Nam Stream at the dam on Nam Chung Road. We will climb upstream via the Old Dragon Pool and leave at either the first or second exit on to the Nam Chung Country Trail depending on how we are doing for time. Last time we went we swam 5 times so do bring your swimmers. Also, please be prepared for some slippery sections and rock climbing along the stream bed.
Meeting Point: 9:30 at Fanling MTR Station
SUN MAY 28, 2006: MA SHI CHAU NATURE TRAIL, PLOVER COVE
At Tai Po Market terminus, we will catch bus no. 74K or green minibus no. 20K to Sam Mun Tsai. The trail starts near the village. The Ma Shi Chau Natural Trail is located on the south-eastern side of Ma Shi Chau ("Horse Manure Island"). This island was aptly named by locals because the shape of the island, viewed from an elevated angle, resembles a heap of horse manure. It is joined to Yim Tin Tsai by a sand bar (called a tombolo). The rock formations in this area were shaped 360 million years ago. It's the oldest rock base in Hong Kong, from which we can learn more about the characteristics of ancient rocks and fossils. There are several "interpretation" signs erected along the trail, telling how old the rocks were formed and so on. This walk is quite short, but I have allowed time for fossil hunting, gawping at scenery. We might check out other nooks and crannies in the vicinity if we feel like it.
Meeting Point: 9:30 Tai Po Market MTR Station
SUN MAR 4, 2007: PLOVER COVE CIRCUIT
Great views. Some rough bits. We'll take a taxi to Wu Kau Tang (near Bride's Pool) and finish at the main dam at Tai Mei Tuk. Good Thai food at the end of the hike.
Meeting Point: 9:30am Tai Po Market MTR Station
SUN MAR 11, 2007: CHI MA WAN PENINSULA, LANTAU ISLAND
From Mui Wo, we'll take a short (by Lantau standards) bus ride to Pui O and walk to Chi Ma Wan Peninsula. After climbing Lo Yan Shan (Old Man's Mountain), we'll make a circuit of the southern half of the peninsula, hugging the coastline and finishing on Pui O Beach. This hike features spectacular views ... weather permitting, of course.
Meeting Point: 9:20am to get the 9:30am ferry to Mui Wo, Central Ferry Piers
SUN MAR 18, 2007: PLOVER COVE PEAK TOUR (THE VINES)
We'll taxi to the trailhead just before Wu Kau Tang and then search for the high route to climb Fan Kei Tok. Watch out, it might be brushy (although Kim will probably wear shorts anyway.) We'll follow the ridge to Tiu Tan Lung and then drop down to the north towards Lai Chi Wo, the old walled village. From Lai Chi Wo it's a familiar and relatively easy trail via Kuk Po to end at Luk Keng.
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Tai Po MTR Station
SUN MAR 25, 2007: MOUNT STENHOUSE, LAMMA ISLAND
From the ferry pier at Sok Kwu Wan we set off on this walk which follows a loop around Lamma with a detour to the highest peak, Mount Stenhouse (San Tei Tong, 353 m.). Its a bit overgrown, apparently (I haven't summited it yet). The walk takes in two of the most attractive beaches on the island and has excellent coastal scenery throughout. Needless to say we'll eat at one of Lamma's excellent seafood restaurants.
Meeting Point: 9.50am at the Central Ferry Piers for the 10am fast ferry to Sok Kwu Wan
SATURDAY MAR 31, 2007: LONGEST HIKE IN MACAU (PLUS LATE LUNCH)
We'll take the ferry to Macau (about 1 hour) and then taxi to the trail head on Coloane Island. The walk is on well-marked trails skirting the wooded peaks of the island. After the walk, we'll stop in at Fernando's for a leisurely lunch. Bring your passport (or HKPID), cash for the ferry and food and a change of clothes so you can be dry for the return ferry ride.
Meeting Point: 9:00am at Shun Tak Centre outside outside the ticket booths for the Macau Ferry at Shun Tak Centre, Sheung Wan
Note: This hike is on a Saturday!
SUN APR 8, 2007: TUNG CHUNG TO THE BUDDHA--BACK ROUTE
We'll follow the trail along the shoreline from Tung Chung, beside the airport, all the way along to Sham Shek Tsuen. From there the map shows a trail ascending to Ngong Ping, finishing under the Cable Car. We might go that way, but if the trail is too brushy, we'll continue along the shoreline to Sham Wat Road and then explore the area around Keung Shan where there are several interesting monasteries. That's right, the hike leader hasn't been there before, so expect to take some 'wrong' turns along the way.
Meeting Point: 9:30am Exit A of the Tung Chung MTR station (30 mins from Central and trains run only every 10 mins)
SUN APR 15, 2007: CLEARWATER BAY WALK/JUNK PEAK

SUN APR 22, 2007: CLOUDY HILL
Walking from the train station we'll follow the Wilson Trail to climb Cloudy Hill. From there we have lots of options including a short jaunt up Lung Shan, 2 small reservoirs and Sha Lo Tung valley. So there will be at least one big hill, but not too hard overall.

SUN APR 29, 2007: WONG NAI CHUNG WAR "BATTLEFIELD TRAIL"
Wong Nai Chung War "Battlefield Trail" and Tai Tam Reservoir Walk Relics from World War II, such as pillboxes, magazines and large concrete cooking stoves are part of this new trail which was opened in 2006 at starts at Parkview to Sir Cecil's Ride. This is short, but we can do a leisurely walk around reservoirs in the area and perhaps then work out a route to Repulse Bay.
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Parkview Lobby
SUN MAY 6, 2007: MYSTERY WALK
It will be a combination of historical stuff, food, walking. Don't assume that you won't climb a mountain or ford a stream. I have some good ideas already.
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Mark's and Spencer's, Queen's Road, Central
SUN MAY 13, 2007: PO TOI ISLAND
Lies just three kilometres off the southeastern tip of Hong Kong Island. Po Toi has some interesting views. "While you are wandering on Po Toi Island," advises a website from the Islands District Council, "remember to open your heart and let your imagination fly. Otherwise, you will not be able to look at the rocks in another perspective and [will so] miss the turtles, the monks, and even the unicorns and castles on (sic) the clouds." There are some trails to explore and all being well, there's now time for a well-earned seafood meal at one of the restaurants in the cove, before joining the crowds for the waddle to the pier. We'll catch the 3 pm or 4.30 pm ferry back to Stanley.
Meeting Point: St Stephen's Beach, near Stanley at. 9.45 for 10am ferry
SUN MAY 20, 2007: TUNG PING CHAU

SUN MAR 9: MOUNT HALLOWES ATTEMPT
We've made 2 half-hearted attempts in the past to find a reasonable trail up Mt Hallowes. This time I'd like to complete the task, or confirm that it's impossible. It's only brush afterall, that might stop us. We'll take minibus number 7 to Hoi Ha and from there start looking at options for climbing Mt Hallowes. According to the map (not very reliable) there are 3 possible trail heads: one near Hoi Ha, one near Nam Shan Tung and the third near the Caritas Siu Tung Camp. If things go according to plan, we'll ascend from Hoi Ha, and descend to the Caritas camp. Then we'll still have time to climb Shek Uk Shan, Wa Mei Shan and then take the valley bottom route via Pak Tam back to Pak Tam Chung.
Meeting Point: 9.30am: Sai Kung main bus terminal near the fountain and public toilets

There may be some brushy areas.
Meeting Point: 9.30am at the Tai Po Market Train Station
SUN MARCH 23: HIGH ISLAND RESERVOIR TO SHA KIU FOR LUNCH (EASTER WEEKEND)
We'll start on the trail past the little village museum in Sai Kung Country Park and go all the way to the High Island dam. Turning right, we'll cross the dam on the road and then turn right again following the road downhill. Towards the bottom, there's a trail to the left which is clearly marked as closed ...yes, that's our trail. It's mostly flat following the headland past an abandoned village and arriving at a pretty bay with a restaurant at Sha Kiu. After lunch hikers can continue up the trail back to the reservoir road or hire the slow boat back to Sai Kung for easier digestion.
Meeting Point: 9.30am at the Sai Kung Bus Terminus near the toilets and the garden pool
SUN MAR 30: MACLEHOSE TRAIL STAGES 1 AND/OR 2
Flat paved road all the way (private cars not allowed, only taxis) This completely flat stage is popular with joggers. Climb over one hill after the reservoir road to get to a gorgeous beach. By not later than 12.00 we should have arrived at the end of stage 1. Either you do section 2 next or you turn around and walk back, unless... you are lucky enough to find a taxi which has just dropped someone off at the start of stage 2. Those who would like to skip stage 1 could join us there by taxi, also from Sai Kung.
Meeting Point: 09.30 in Sai Kung at bus station, near the toilets and the garden pool. From there we take a taxi to the start of the walk.
SUN APRIL 6: LEAD MINE PASS, MACLEHOSE 8 AND TAI MO SHAN
OK gang, let's try this one again. The last time this hike was scheduled for what turned out to be one of the most polluted days on record. This is a beautiful but strenuous hike, so come prepared! After climbing Lead Mine Pass, we go along Maclehose Stage 8 and up Tai Mo Shan, then down to Route Twisk. Those who've had enough can catch the bus to Tsuen Wan. If enough people want to continue, we'll go on Maclehose 9 and the Yuen Tsuen Ancient Trail to Tsuen Wan.
Meeting Point: Tai Po Market MTR, 9:30am
SUN APRIL 13: MUI WO TO PUI O VIA THE PENINSULA
We'll start walking right from the Mui Wo, ferry pier. Half way we will have a super view towards Cheung Chau. We can decide to have afterwards some food at: "Ooh La La" a restaurant in Pui O, or head back to Mui Wo for a bite over there.

SUN APRIL 20: LANTAU TRAIL STAGES 9-11
We'll take the ferry to Mui Wo and then the Tai O bus to Shek Pik Reservoir. We will follow the undulating walk on stage 9 to Shui Hau, passing a pretty, secluded beach, walk along the shady catchwater on Stage 10 to the Tung Chung Road and continue along a catchwater on Stage 11 to Pui O. We have a hill start, then it is a fairly easy 3 hour ramble. Walk through bamboo forests and abandoned villages on traditional stone laid paths. Shaded most of the way. Good views of Shenzhen. We could alter the route slightly - depends on what we feel like!
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Tai Po Market MTR Station

We will take escalator to meet Alice in the end of escalator, and climb half hour up to the Peak, maybe have a drink in Pacific coffee, then climb down from Pok Fu Lam park. then take bus to central to have very different food together: yummy Vietnam food called "Ya-Chuang" in Wellington Street because this restaurant is so popular, so maybe we better to make reservation first, so if any one wants to go, PLS inform me before 5/9 Friday.
Meeting Point: 4:00pm at in HK station, E1 exit, there is a information center near Godiva
Note: This hike is on a Saturday!
SUN MAY 11, 2008: TUNG LUNG CHAU
Tung Lung Chau is just off the tip of Clearwater Bay Peninsula, circular in shape and about 2 km in diameter. It is largely bare of trees with a 232 peak in the middle of the island. This walk will take you anti-clockwise around the island and over the peak and takes in the shorter route to Tung Lung Fort. Apparently there are small shops selling food and drinks on the island.

SUN MAY 18, 2008: SHUI LO CHO POOLS (LANTAU ISL.)

We need to leave the path at the bridge with the brown painted rails (see photos). After swimming in a choice of pools you finish along the waterfront back to Tai O. The hike is not too taxing but the descent by the waterfall is a steep scramble. Bring your swimming gear.
Meeting Point: 9:20 at the Central Ferry Piers for the 9:30 ferry to Mui Wo
SUN MAY 25, 2008: ART "HIKE" -A RAMBLE WITH A DIFFERENCE!
Art is what you make it. Be it on top of a mountain or in the urban jungle. While the route is still being worked out, you will be traversing Hong Kong to some out-of-the way art "depots" and some close to town. We'll make some "conceptual" art on top of some peak, so wear your artistic hiking gear. Come and make your own art statement as the weather warms up.
Meeting Point: 10:00am at Marks and Spencers, Central
SUN MARCH 1: KOW KING SHAN (PEAK EAST OF TUEN MUN, OPPOSITE CASTLE PEAK)
Fantastic views, weather permitting, over Tuen Mun, Gold Coast and Tai Lam Chung reservoir. We'll catch bus #960 to Tuen Mun and then taxi to the trailhead at Fu Tai Sheung Tsuen. The walk takes us alongside a narrow reservoir and then up up up to Kow King Shan. We descend on the other side of the mountain finishing in So Kwun Wat. Second lunch will be at the Gold Coast.

Starting from Kwu Tung we shall climb the incline to the top of Ki Lung Hill (ridiculously named as Snowdon by the former army) to see defensive positions overseeing the Lok Ma Chau crossing. After finishing the Snowdon Pass shall climb Tai Law Tin (ridiculously Ben Nevis) protecting the Cassino Lines (WW II in Italy, now a PLA camp). Could see the Chinese side of the border and the Fanling Golf Course. Descend SW to the mysterious Chinese Lung Tam Ancient Temple, pass thru villages of Cheung Lek, Lin Tong Mei to reach Fan Kam Road for transportation home. NO food or water all the way except the last portion. No water treading, but we may meet some bush.

SUN MARCH 22: PLOVER COVE PEAK TOUR (THE VINES)
We'll taxi to the trailhead just before Wu Kau Tang and then search for the high route to climb Fan Kei Tok. Watch out, it might be brushy (although Kim will probably wear shorts anyway.) We'll follow the ridge to Tiu Tan Lung and then drop down to the north towards Lai Chi Wo, the old walled village. From Lai Chi Wo it's a familiar and relatively easy trail via Kuk Po to end at Luk Keng.
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Tai Po MTR Station

SUN APRIL 5: WATER TUNNEL EXPLORATION -TING KAU
Start from Yuen Tsuen Ancient Trial up to top of Shek Lung Kung, divert from the main trial & follow a maze of hill trials down to the Ting Kau water catchment. Explore a series of three tunnels, comparatively shorter than the last Tai Lam tunnel we visited. No bats should be expected. Bring along a good working torch & prepare your shoes for getting wet. It may involve a little bit of climbing on the water catchment wall, around 6 feet tall. Move out of the tunnels to reach Sham Tseng Settlement Reservoir & then all the way back to Tsing Lung Tau. (Late lunch in that Tsing Lung Tau Dim Sum restaurant.)
Meeting Point: 9:30am Exit A at Tsuen Wan MTR

Turning right, we'll cross the dam on the road and then turn right again following the road downhill. Towards the bottom, there's a trail to the left which is clearly marked as closed ...yes, that's our trail. SUN APRIL 19: RAZOR BACK OR TAI TO YAN
Meeting Point: 9:30 Tai Po Market MTR Station (1 hour from Central!)
SUN APRIL 26: IN SEARCH OF THE FAT SHAN FERRY MEMORIAL STONE, LANTAU EAST
Last time we could not reached the memorial stone due to high tide. This time we shall descend from another spur hopefully looking for it. Starting from Lantau Link Toll Collection bus stop, walk along the coast & descend to Tso Wan (Grass Beach). Transcend Fa Ping (Vase ) Beach to Pa Tau Kwu (Overtaking Drum) headland in search of the memorial stone recording the tragedy of sinking the Hong Kong-Macau Fat Shan ferry. All the people on board died by an incoming typhoon capsizing the vessel. SUN MAY 3: TAI PO KAU NATURE WALK
This nature reserve is one of the few genuine areas of rain forest left in Hong Kong. It is very shaded and easy, around 10 kms and there will be plenty of flora and fauna to spot. Bring your binoculars and any of your favorite bug and plant reference books.
Meeting Point: 9.30 a.m at Taipo MTR-We`ll get a taxi to the Reserve
SUN MAY 10: MA SHI CHAU (HORSE MANURE) NATURE TRAIL, PLOVER COVE
At Tai Po Market terminus, we will catch bus no. 74K or green minibus no. 20K to Sam Mun Tsai. The trail starts near the village. The Ma Shi Chau Nature Trail is located on the south-eastern side of Ma Shi Chau ("Horse Manure Island"). This walk is quite short, we can go fossil hunting and gawp at scenery. Since we are doing a lot of bushwhacking lately, we maybe about to find a route that circles the island when the trails end. Or we might check out other nooks and crannies in the vicinity if we feel like it.
Meeting Point: 9:30 Tai Po Market MTR Station
SUN MAY 17: GOAT, MILK AND A WALK IN THE WOODS
After a short taxi ride to the Yuen Tsuen Ancient Trail near Allway Gardens, we'll start a steady climb. We'll take a few turns (maybe even some wrong ones) meandering upwards and northwards. We'll probably turn right at Ha Fa Shan, then left towards Sheung Fa Shan, and right towards Pak Shek Kiu. After crossing the Maclehose Trail Stage 9, the last stretch will be on the Kap Lung Forest Trail down towards some special milky treats at 'Farm Milk Co.' I expect the walking will take about 3 hours, but I'm usually wrong.
Meeting Point: 9:30am Exit A at Tsuen Wan MTR
SUN MAY 24: LANTAU TRAIL 7&8 ( CIRCUM. THE COAST LINES FROM SHEK PIK TO TAI O
Walk down path towards Tai Long Tsuen, having to go over a few land slides, some of paths are covered with great rock formation. Head down to Kau Ling Chung beach for a swim and lunch. Then continue on along the coast to Fan lau, seeing more beautiful beaches and small villages. If we have time we will visit Fau Lau Fort on the head land and then continue on to Tai O along the coast. This hike is not too hard but it is a long way, be prepared for the sun as it is not all shaded. ROUTE AND LEADER CHANGED DUE TO HEAVY RAIN.
Meeting Point: Tung Chung MTR (Exit A) @ 9.00am
SUN MAY 31: CHEUNG CHAU "EXPOSED"
Cheung Chau looks like a tiny dumbell on a map of Hong Kong, yet there's far more to it than may appear at first glance. With coastal trails, beaches, small rural valleys, and a village dotted with temples but with only one (police) car, Cheung Chau has plenty to see, the bonus being a pirate's cave and a mini "great wall". We'll eat when we're are done. Your "Dear Leader" is staying on Cheung Chau for the weekend and will meet you at the Cheung Chau Ferry Pier when the boat arrives. We'll ramble for around 3 hours.
Meeting Point: 9:30am (slow ferry) from Central Outlying Islands Pier

We'll ride the bus to Shui Hau and walk up the Lantau Trail towards the catchwater. From there we'll be looking for the 'Third Dog Tooth' trail that ascends a steep ridge to Kau Nga Ling and than onwards to Lantau Peak. Last year we did the first and second teeth, so this year we'll try the longest one which will also be quite exposed. If it's a windy day, we'll have to hang on. For the descent, we'll stay on the Lantau Trail over the open ridges on the east side of Lantau Peak. (Route changed due to bad weather and change of leader.)
Meeting Point: 9:30am at the Central Ferry Piers for the 9:40 ferry to Mui Wo
SUN MARCH 14: WANCHAI GAP AND THE PEAK

Meeting Point: 9:00am outside Hopewell Centre at Queens Road, Wanchai
SUN MAR 21: SAI LAU KONG

We`ll climb the peaks of Fan Kei Tok (369m) and Tiu Tang Lung (416m) on our way to the village of Sam A Tsuen, after which we`ll continue further on small, little walked trails until we reach Sai Lau Kong. If we`re lucky we can get a boat back to Sam A Tsuen, but if not, we`ll just walk back. When going back to Wu Kau Tang, instead of climbing mountains, we`ll take a trail down in the valley. Please bring your flashlights along just in case - we might run out of daylight at the end!
Meeting Point: Tai Po MTR at 9:30am
SUN MAR 28: ERODED HILLS OF WEST NT
We`ll start by taking a taxi to the Ling To Monastery from where we`ll begin our climb to the mountain ridge. We`ll head southwards among eroded hills, gullies and ravines, among a scenery quite unique in Hong Kong. We`ll finish close to Leung King Estate in Tuen Mun, where light rail or bus can be taken back to civilization. Total walking distance is about 11km, and it`ll take 5-6 hours from start to finish.

Towards the bottom, there's a trail to the left which is clearly marked as closed ...yes, that's our trail. It's mostly flat following the headland past an abandoned village and arriving at a pretty bay with a restaurant. After lunch hikers can continue up the trail back to the reservoir road or hire the slow boat back to Sai Kung for easier digestion.

Note: This hike is on a Saturday!
SUN APRIL 11: TAI MO SHAN & SHING MUN WOODS WALK
From Tsuen Wan take a mini-bus to Chuen Lung, a village hidden in the Tai Mo Shan famous for its Chinese countryside dim sum. (Sorry we shall not have time to taste the food there) The walk will start from the village along the contour 300 m path towards the Shing Mun woods until reaching a high point at around 600 m hitting the Tai Shing Stream. Meeting Point: 9.30am at Tsuen Wan MTR Exit A
SUN MAY 2: CLOUDY HILL AND BEYOND THE CLOUDS
Up Cloudy Hill (Wilson Trail Section 8) and those steps...we'll go down the hill, bypass the turn off for Pat Sang Leng (that's another trip!) and do Section 10 of the trail till we hit Luk Keng. This might vary slightly after consultation with the Old Regular Rozers...
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Tai Wo MTR Station
SUN MAY 9: SHARP PEAK
We take a boat from Wong Shek Ferry Pier to Ko Lau Wan and then head backwards towards Sharp Peak (but we will not be climbing this!). The bushy trails may be near the beginning if we cannot find an alternative trail. Then, we will be walking out and almost along a ridge and up to Nam She Au (not very high). Eventually we will end up on the very beaten trail of the Maclehose 2, back on concrete to Pak Tam Au (unless we are lucky to grab a small ferry/boat out at Bradbury Hall, but that is kind of hit and miss). This is a very beautiful walk, but exposed so you will need a hat/umbrella is even better, sunblock and plenty of water plus food. WARNING: Be prepared for a possible change of walk if we decide it is too hot on the day for this walk.
Meeting Point: 9:15 am Sai Kung Big Bus terminal on steps near fountain/toilets Alternative: Meet at 8:45 for a morning coffee or breakfast at Cafe Ali Ole DO NOT BE LATE as we want to catch the bus to Wong Shek Pier which leaves at 9:30am. This bus does not run very often.

Monkeys may greet us at Kowloon reservoir where we may detour to see some WWII structures. Then we finally end at leafy Shing Mun reservoir before getting a minibus to Tseun Wan MTR. About 4 hours or so should do it.
Meeting Point: Choi Hung MTR Exit B at 9.30am. We'll take taxi to Gilwell Camp Site

Meeting Point: 9:30 at the Central Ferry Piers for the 9:40 ferry to Mui Wo

We shall start from Chuen Lung where a mini-bus links it to Tsuen Wan MTR and walk under dense woods or tropical ferns on ancient trials winding up and down green hill slopes to stream valleys cutting contour lines. The most interesting spot will be the massive unused paddy fields at Pak Shek Kiu, with what seemed to be the remains of some ancient attempt to cultivate the highland. Other than agricultural, it appeared to be a mining village with back hills pitted with mining holes. We shall pass numerous vanishing villages: Ngau Lui>Pak Shek Kiu>Sheung Fa Shan>Lin Fa Shan> Sheung Tong stream basin>Tsing Fai Tong> Tsing Lung Tau. We shall walk a lot of ups and downs, at times bushy on rugged slopes, on soft swampy fields, along rocky tumbling stream basins but shall be awarded with the peaceful & serene wilderness. After reaching the Buffalo Hill, we`ll then turn left and descend to Nui Po Au, from there we`ll climb the Nui Po Shan (399 M), on which we may take a break to enjoy the nice scenery. We`ll then descend back to Nui Po Au and go back to town through Mui Tsz Lam. Expect some ups and downs and mostly rough trails, although nothing too rubbly or brushy. Bring along your hiking stick as you might need it going downhill. Besides, please bring enough water as the weather is getting warmer these days.

Meeting Point: Tai Po MTR at 9:30am
SUN APRIL 3, 2011: LION ROCK CLIMB
This time we would start the hike from the middle of the urban areas of Kowloon. From Lok Fu Station we would head towards the Lion Rock, and after some meanderings through the Lok Fu Estate and the Tin Ma Estate we would find ourselves at the BBQ site of Lion Rock Country Park. We would have sufficient warm-up by then to start our climb to the Lion Rock summit via the Handover Pavilion. We'll take the bus to start walking at Pui O and along the lovely little concrete path through the fields hopefully seeing some buffaloes along the way. And then on paved roads till we come to the start (end of Mui-Wo to Pui-O track). Then if I remember correctly it's UPWARDS for quite a while, first through a forest until we get to some rocks to sit and admire the view. Then down and up again till another lovely spot. And well, you get the picture. I would say moderate to strenuous with a small 's' because of the up at beginning and the time taken. If it's hot on the day, we'll skip the big hill and go around the outside of the peninsula instead.
Meeting Point: Central Ferry Pier at 9.30am for the 9.40am ferry to Mui Wo
SUN MAY 29, 2011: MACAU - COLOANE ISLAND TRAIL
We'll take the ferry to Macau (about 1 hour) and then taxi to the trail head on Coloane Island. The walk is on a well-marked trail skirting the wooded peaks of the island. After the walk, we'll stop in at Fernando's for a most excellent 'second lunch'. Anyone not wanting to hike can meet us at the bar in Fernandos at Hak Sa Beach around 2:00pm. (Don't expect us to be prompt. Relax!) Bring your passport, cash for the ferry and food (Fernando's doesn't take credit cards) and a change of clothes so you can be dry for the return ferry ride.
Meeting Point: 9:00am sharp outside the ticket booths for the Macau Ferry at Shun Tak Centre, Sheung Wan. We'll take the 9:30 ferry.
SUN MAR 4: CASTLE PEAK PENINSULA RAVINE ADVENTURE
Between Castle Peak and its west coast lies a stream basin mixed with curious landscape and interesting plants. A crescent shaped ravine surrounded by vertical cliffs about 120m is the most spectacular. Its dark narrow winding entrance hidden beneath undergrowth further mystifies it. Once entered deep into the center it suddenly becomes a large 270-degree lecture hall theatre under a bright skylight. We shall first visit Tsing Shan Monastery and move northwest to enter the complex stream basins, which are rich with pitcher plants, orchards, camellia. We shall then pass the disappeared village of Heung Fa Lo and end up in Lung Kwu Beach to take a bus back to Tuen Mun. Paths mostly are loose, gravely, steep and at times bushy with many ups and downs. Bring gloves and wear long trousers.

SUN MAR 11: SUNSET PEAK THE OTHER WAY
We'll take the bus up to the pass and the hike the steep steps up to Sunset Peak on the Lantau Trail. Apparently there is a hidden reservoir up near the cabins at the top of the ridge, so we'll go off the trail a bit to find that. After some explorations, we'll eat our snacks and lunch on the top and then head back down to Tung Chung via the Country Park Trail. Expect a 4-5 hour walk.
Meeting Point: 9:30am Tung Chung MTR Exit B

After that, we'll take a reasonably steep (expect slightly brushy and no developed steps) descent before doing another up to the Ki Lun Shan (222 meters). We'll try to locate a trail that will take us to Wing Ping Tsuen where we will finish and can stop to see an old Chinese building called Tai Fu Tai Mansion. It's not a very long walk but expect a few steep ups and downs on undeveloped trails. During the walk we'll see some old British trenches again and, if weather permits, we'll get good views to the wetlands and also to Shenzhen.

It's mostly flat following the headland past an abandoned village and arriving at a pretty bay with a restaurant at Sha Kiu. After lunch hikers can continue up the trail back to the reservoir road or hire the boat back to Sai Kung for easier digestion.

The hike will feature very nice scenery over and around the fully exposed mountain range. If the weather is decent, we`ll get good views of Shenzhen, Pat Heung valley, Yuen Long and, in general, the northern New Territories. Near Kat Hing Bridge we shall enter the Lin Fa lower course, rather flat but deposited with eroded sediments and rocks. Three or more pools associated with waterfalls are embedded along the upper valley which is v-shaped with steep slopes covered by dense woods with no retreating routes. Expect to jump between boulders, grasp on rock crevices or climb overhanging cliffs requiring a bit of dexterity and balance. We shall finish at a Sham Cheng goose restaurant in late afternoon where hungry hikers might enjoy a beer or meal. Bring your swimmers and be ready for wet feet.

Meeting Point: 9:30am at Lam Tin MTR station, Exit A
SUNDAY MAR 24: BLUFF HEAD PENINSULA
We shall take the bus 94 to Wong Shek Pier. From there, we shall hire speed boats sailing across the Tolo Channel to Bluff Head, the extreme NE tip of the Hong Kong landmass & a place of special geological interest. The volcanic rock overlying the Lower Jurassic sedimentary rocks outcrop from Bluff Head to Pak Sha Chau along Tolo Channel makes up the entire southern arm of the Plover Cove Reservoir. After landing, not on a pier but by jumping on boulders of the coast, we shall climb the top of a cliff among bush to reach a faint path on top of the headland & walk westward. This is a journey of no return, as the speed boat will say good-bye & there is no escape route all the way. The walk will include visits to Tai Ling, Ngong Chong Shan, Pak Kok Shan, Feng Wong Wat Teng ridge, Luk Wu Tung, Shek Nga Ta, Hong Shek Mun Au, Mount Newland, Mui Tin, Wu Kau Tang and to Bridge's Pool bus terminus. The interlocking slopes, mostly have no mobile phone signals coverage, are rugged and exposed. Bring enough food, drinks, a pair of gloves and a working torch for emergency. The fee for the speed boat will be $50-60 per head and reservation is necessary for booking the speed boat . As the number of hikers will be limited by the maximum number of passengers, the offer of the walk will be on first-come-first serve basis. Please confirm your intention to join by sending an email to the hike leader.

Iron ore was mined at Ma On Shan from 1906 to 1976. We start our journey by visiting the main ore haulage tunnel at a level of 110 meters. We then climb up the westernmost ridge of the Hunchbacks to an old mine trail halfway up the hill. Now known as the Maze Trail, this path winds around the densely forested Wild Goose Valley just below the rugged crags of Tiu Shau Ngam. It then joins a very steep trail up the north ridge of Ngau Ngak Shan. After crossing the main saddle (which may still be covered in wild spring azaleas), we descend the south ridge of Ma On Shan past a large open-pit mining platform, which was the first area to be mined. Just below this is the village of Ma On Shan Tsuen, where a few of the retired miners and their descendants still reside. Also nearby is the entrance of the upper mine tunnel at a level of 240 meters. Bring a flashlight if you want to peek inside, but it is advisable to stay near the entrance because the tunnel roof is unstable. We will not be climbing any cliffs, but you will need to use your hands on some of the steeper slopes, so gloves are recommended. Total walking time about 6 hours.

The badly-eroded gravel slopes are at times steep, bare, loose, & at times associated with gullies and ravines. Bring a hiking pole and pair of gloves and prepare for many ups and downs. Under clear weather, we will have a chance to glance at the Western Corridor connecting HK to Shenzhen Port. We shall NOT climb the summit of Castle Peak and we'll end up at the Leung Tin Estate bus stop.

The hike will feature very nice scenery over and around the fully exposed mountain range. If the weather is decent, we`ll get good views of Shenzhen, Pat Heung valley, Yuen Long and, in general, the northern New Territories. Before finishing in Kam Tin village, we can also stop to see some of the old Tang Ancestral Halls and other old Chinese style buildings. This hike is suitable for all levels of hikers but be prepared for some gravel and loose soil on some of the downhill parts. The Yuen Tsuen Ancient Trail, as the name suggests, connects Yuen Long and Tsuen Wan. We would do a short version of it, starting from Tsuen Wan and ending up in Sham Tseng which is famous for its roasted goose. The walk would take about 3.5 to 4 hours, and 50% shade. Probably we would have lunch at Sham Tseng. And this trail has been featured in National Geographic. If it rains on Sunday, you can assume that the hike would be cancelled. SUNDAY MARCH 23: CASTLE PEAK PENINSULA RAVINES

We shall first visit Tsing Shan Monastery (if time permits) and move northwest to enter the complex stream basins, which are rich with pitcher plants, and small orchards. We shall then pass the disappeared village of Heung Fa Lo and end up in Lung Kwu Beach to take a bus back to Tuen Mun. Paths mostly are loose, gravely, steep and at times bushy with many ups and downs. Bring gloves and enough water.
Meeting Point: 9:45 am at Exit "F" Tuen Mun MTR station
SUNDAY MARCH 30: TIU SHAU NGAM AND MA ON SHAN
Our journey begins with a steep climb up the northwest ridge of Tiu Shau Ngam. You will need to use both hands for some scrambles on rock outcroppings, but there is no technical rock climbing. Once on top, we continue along the usual Hunchbacks ridge trail to the peaks of Ngau Ngak Shan and Ma On Shan. In late March, the saddle is often covered with wild azaleas in full bloom. Coming down, we will explore a new (to us) trail that heads south and west into an abandoned mining area. The descent is likely to be steep with loose soil (and possibly some bushwhacking), so please bring gloves and appropriate footwear. If time permits, we will finish by walking out on a gentler path from Ma On Shan Tsuen to Tai Shui Hang. Total walking time about 6 or 7 hours.
Meeting Point: 9:00am at Ma On Shan MTR station, exit B

After lunch hikers can continue up the trail back to the reservoir road or hire the slow boat back to Sai Kung for easier digestion.

SUN, MAR 5, 2017: HOI HA TO MOUNT HALLOWES AND MT SHEK UN
We start hiking from Hoi Ha and head to Mount Hallowes and then descend to trail from ferry pier of Sham Chung to Hoi Ha. However, we do not stay on this trail for too long or as far as the ferry pier since we take on the trail to Shek Uk Shan. The options from Shek Uk will be time dependent. In the past, we have ended up on the trail which takes us back to the Hoi Ha Road (and not so far from the Hoi Ha/Wong Shek Pier road intersection). We have not come across many hikers on these trails and views from the peninsula are well worth it. Note, some parts may be bushy. Note, also I have not done this hike in a while, so it may be a bit exploratory, but hoping memory serves me well. Another note: As you know transport back from Sai Kung can be busy at prime times, so it may be better if you are willing to take time to have a drink/snack/evening meal in Sai Kung with convivial company before heading home.
Level of Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous (some climbs)
Bring: Sunscreen, plenty of water & food as there is no place to buy any (unless we are lucky with the place near Shek Uk but no guarantees)

The exploration will continue from San Kwai Tin to Pak Kung Au, along the HK/China fence border, and eventually end up at Sha Tau Kok. Be prepared to encounter bushy areas and strange stream beds. The hike leader will also be ready to engage in conversation about the history of the area, Buddhist philosophy, and the nature of being alive. We'll climb slowly up to the high plateau of Ngong Ping where we can view the Big Buddha and eat the large group veggie lunch, or if the crowds are too much for us, perhaps just go to the little noodle joint for a quick snack.

SUN, MAY 21, 2017: TAI-O TO TUNG CHUNG
We will take a bus to the fishing village of Tai O and then make our way back to Tung Chung via a coastal path. It's up for a while, but mainly through pine trees, and then along in a wide curve with views over the harbour - Quarry Bay, Kai Tak etc. When we come off the Wilson at one point, we can decide how we want to finish depending on time - the easier or the harder, sweatier way.

Dress Code: Men: Collared T shirts (does not have to be shirt), no flip flops, neat shorts (not sports or beach shorts) & women accordingly. (Not like you have just been to the beach).
Champagne Brunch: I will book for 12:00 pm (non-hikers, please meet then)

SUN, MAR 15, 2020: HOI HA TO MOUNT HALLOWES AND MT SHEK UN
We start hiking from Hoi Ha and head to Mount Hallowes and then descend to the trail from the ferry pier of Sham Chung to Hoi Ha.
Note that some parts may be very bushy. Also I have not done this hike in a while, so it may be a bit exploratory, but hoping memory serves me well. Another note: As you know transport back from Sai Kung can be busy at prime times, so it may be better if you are willing to take time to have a drink/snack/evening meal in Sai Kung with convivial company before heading home.
Level of Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous (some climbs)
Bring: Sunscreen, plenty of water & food as there is no place to buy any (unless we visit Cheung Sheung, but no guarantees)
Meeting Point: 9:30am, Sai Kung by Hoi Ha mini bus stand - Green mini bus 7 (Depending on queues, and times of mini bus, may decide to share a taxi to Hoi Ha)

We shall start at the Tsuen Wan MTR ascending to Chun Lung Village and walk under woods on ancient trails winding up and down green hill slopes cutting stream valleys while passing the vanished villages one by one. The most interesting spot will be the massive unused paddy fields at Pak Shek Kiu for cultivation of highland rice. Other than agricultural, it appeared to be a mining village with back hills pitted with mining holes.
We shall pass numerous vanished villages: Ngau Lui>Pak Shek Kiu>Sheung Fa Shan>Lin Fa Shan> Sheung Tong stream basin>Tsing Fai Tong> Tsing Lung Tau. We shall walk a lot of ups and downs, at times bushy on rugged slopes, on soft swampy fields, along rocky tumbling stream basins but shall be awarded with the peaceful & serene wilderness. Ends up at Castle Peak Road.

Sun, March 5 2023: Robins Nest, Macintosh Fort & Lin Ma Hang

Finally, we'll touch down at Lin Ma Hang Village. A feature of the village is 'The Residence of Ip Ting-Sz', a colonial style building, and one of the places where Sun Yat-Sen met his friends and collaborators as he plotted the revolution in China, which would in the end overthrow the emperor. After visiting the village we will follow a barbed wire fence close to the HK-Shenzhen border and search for a secret trail to a minibus close to the new border crossing back to civilization. The highest point is at 492 metres and the elevation gain during the hike is about 650 metres.
Please bring plenty of water as the weather might be starting to get warmer.
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Fanling MTR station. Wait just outside the turnstiles.

The path is a little brushy at times as we enter a bamboo forest before ascending briefly to the Maclehose Trail. From there we`ll join the Buffaloes. West Buffalo Hill - (604 M) and Buffalo Hill (606 M). Both offer fantastic scenery.
We'll descend back to Nui Po Au and go back to town through Fa Sam Hang or Mui Tsz Lam where there are buses to Sha Tin Town Centre, Wan Chai, Mongkok, Diamond Hill and other destinations. Note that some of the descents are steep and quite gravelly, so you are advised to bring a stick and gloves if you prefer to use them as well as shoes suitable for this kind of terrain. Please bring food and plenty of water as the weather is warming up.
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Hang Hau MTR station, exit B1.
Sun, March 19 2023: Lamma Island

We shall search on the left hand-side for a hidden path going steadily downwards to abandoned cultivated fields of Hung Fa Ngan and A Pong Long on the eastern arm of Lin Fa Shan. Our traditional easter hike returns again. We will take bus 94 and alight at Pak Tam Chung. After walking briefly on the Mac 1 we will divert to the Sheung Yiu Country Trail, home to the Sheung Yiu Folk Museum. After returning briefly again to the Mac 1 we will once again divert to follow a coastal path to the fishing village of Sha Kiu. The route will take us via the abandoned resort of Tai She Wan (Snake Bay).
Note that this path is a little brushy at times and on a hot sunny day is total exposed. From Sha Kiu we will head back to Sai Kung on a speed boat. Some of us will have food/drinks in Sai Kung and you are welcome to join us. Another option will be to eat in Sha Kiu before we head back. We can decide on the day.
Meeting Point: 9:30am at the Sai Kung bus terminus near the toilets
Sun, April 16 2023: Po Toi Island
Po Toi Island lies just three kilometres off the Southeastern tip of Hong Kong Island. Po Toi has villages, hills, coastal inlets, rocky headlands, and some of Hong Kong`s best coastal scenery. There are some trails to explore, rocks with strange shapes and a ghost house built by a pirate that served as a base for the Japanese army during the second world war. Exciting stuff.
All being well, we`ll have time for a well-earned seafood meal at one of the restaurants in the cove, before heading to the pier for the 3pm or 4.30pm ferry back to Stanley. Round trip cost for the ferry is HK$50.00
Meeting Point: Blake's Pier near Murray House in Stanley at 9.40am for the 10am ferry
Sun, April 23 2023: Razor Hill & Quarry Views
We'll tour some new (for us) peaks and trails in the Razor Hill area. The hike starts at the junction of Clear Water Bay Road and On Sau Road. We'll find the path over Lung Wo Shan that then follows the top of the ridge behind the big quarry overlooking Kowloon. After scoping out the whole ridge, we will probably need to backtrack and join the trail back to Tseng Lan Shue. From there we'll enjoy the proper shady trails to climb Razor Hill and later descending into Po Lam. Long pants are recommended as there are some slightly brushy areas.
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Choi Hung MTR outside Exit C2 in the queue for the Sai Kung minibus.

The journey is 90 mins there and back and is HK$90 for the return journey.

Sun, May 14 2023: Shouson Hill to Wanchai
It's time to bag one of the rare hills in Hong Kong that we have never climbed. We start our walk with a short section of roads with our fingers crossed that we will find the short trail that ascends and descends Shouson Hill (148m). Then we will join another new trail (for us) connecting Deep Water Bay to Wong Nai Chung Gap with a steady but gentle incline. At last we'll climb some stairs to join the Black's Link stroll which will connect us all the way back to Wanchai Gap. I'm expecting nothing too strenuous for this warm weather walk. I've noticed that my favorite Malaysia restaurant has re-opened in Wanchai, so that may be our second-lunch destination.
Meeting Point: 9:30am at Ocean Park MTR Station, Exit C.
Sun, May 21 2023: Kam Shan Country Park Excursion
Shady trails, reservoirs and gentle hills sounds like a good hiking area for mid-May in Kowloon. From the starting point at Kowloon Reservoir, we'll visit at least 4 reservoirs, staying away from the concrete and choosing the shadier, quieter places, probably ending somewhere in Kwai Chung for second lunch.
